Imagine a fitness studio that encourages you to do less—a beautiful atmosphere of quality over quantity where young and old can thrive. Every class begins with a postural lengthening exercise designed to build awareness about how your body feels at that very moment. Then, after a few drills, you can feel your flexibility increase, your coordination improve, and your strength enhanced. Next, the instructor takes a quick assessment around the room to give individual drills to each class participant, which they carefully execute. Another look around the room, and the instructor knows everyone feels better than when they walked into class a few minutes earlier, as evidenced by the improved postures, gaits, and of course, the smiles. Then and only then will the strength practice part of the class begin.
General and individual advice on weights and variations for each movement exercise follow. One student’s will is clearly larger than his skill, but the coach is there to bring him down to earth—form, over load. The coach reminds him that the quality of movement is far superior to how heavy you lift or how many repetitions you can do. The student smiles in acknowledgment, as this is a lesson he has been taught before. The command for the first exercise is given, the music volume rises, and the countdown begins. In one, two. One, two, three, four! The students swiftly lift double kettlebells off the black mats. For the next thirty minutes, the students navigate a challenging class comprising bodyweight and kettlebell skills arranged elegantly to provide a powerful tonic to the nervous system.
“At Iron Core, we believe in skill development as a physical practice over mindless workouts.” So says Os Aponte, who co-owns this boutique fitness studio in Oceanside, California, with his wife, Erica Buechner. He continues: “In addition, many gyms lack the level of instruction conducive to developing a resilient body capable of moving well through the world. We have developed a comprehensive approach at Iron Core that addresses flexibility, endurance, power, coordination, balance, and vision training by integrating the proprioceptive, visual, and vestibular systems. We accomplish this by drawing from bodyweight training, kettlebell training, functional neurology, martial arts, and dance. No other studio can deliver the comprehensive approach we have perfected through 18 years of experience teaching group classes, small group training, personal training, and workshops.”
Both Erica and Os have benefitted from a lifetime of fitness. For Erica being physically fit has allowed her to enjoy a long and healthy relationship with dance. Being fit helped Os while in the Army, in the accounting field, in dance, and being a coach. They firmly believe that fitness should enhance your life, and the Iron Core program is designed with quality of life in mind. “We try to teach our students to apply our training philosophy instead of just putting them through a workout.” When you see them instruct, it is immediately apparent that they love what they do and are masters at it. They met in dance class, and many of their early dates were at Bird Park, where they would practice their kettlebell skills together. Erica and Os lead from the front and are excellent examples for their students.
Iron Core’s value lies in the tools used and how they apply them. The school’s strong focus on developing proper form and technique is one of its main features and something integral to its identity as a fitness organization. Identifying where the student is on their fitness journey is crucial in fomenting (establishing?) healthy and highly functioning individuals. Iron Core’s assessment process is superior in determining the current fitness level and progressing the client from where they are. “We meet you where you are and not the other way around,” says co-owner Erica, a StrongFirst certified instructor and an accomplished dancer and choreographer. By taking the extra time to figure out the ideal starting point, we can progress clients faster and safer than other gyms. This level of individualized service makes the students feel like they are receiving personal training while in a class setting. For Erica and Os, this is how they create unmatched value in the community they serve. Their services are highly adaptable, and the students do not have to be in shape to participate in the program because the methods have safe progressions to develop all levels. Some are attracted to the minimalist approach of the program, while others like the tools they utilize. Students also reference the small class size as a strong point of the program.
Fitness in the 21st century requires a sophisticated methodology to get students in shape and help them age with resiliency. You can obsess about having a six-pack and the number on the scale, or you can lay a foundation to be in excellent condition today and when you are 60 years old. In class, a common phrase is “We play the long game.” For Os and Erica, it is paramount that their services are sustainable for their students. Crash diets and extreme weight challenges negatively influence the fitness industry, and they categorically stand against such practices.
Iron Core’s sophisticated wellness offering is its most vital and valuable asset; however, this does not paint a complete picture of our business. Classes are fun, rewarding, and challenging. When you spend 45 minutes, three times a week, with nine other individuals working on similar goals as you are, it creates camaraderie. Week after week, the students overcome obstacles and support each other while developing strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, coordination, and vitality. Students join to get help with things they can’t do, but they stay because of the community they have entered. A community that believes in cultivating strength and approaching physical training as a skill. The skills you will acquire at this gym will help you tackle the fitness needs of every stage of your life.
Widely known as one of the original kettlebell gyms in the US by kettlebell connoisseurs, Iron Core is a StrongFirst gym. This distinction further strengthens their position as the strength experts in San Diego County.
As class ends, the music shifts to a mellow Santana song, and the students are led through a series of stretches and breathing techniques to relax both body and mind. As each student exits the studio, their body language has a real sense of peace. Consistent with their training philosophy, Erica and Os want each student to leave class feeling better than when they walked in. Because fitness should enhance your life, and they can show you how.
